Some uplifting news for the Liverpudlians. Stevie G is ready to rock n' roll against City this weekend. Will Liverpool join the list of clubs that have stuck it to City?

Personally, I think Liverpool played well against Birmingham - they faltered familiarly on set pieces but overall they were a number of positives.

Glen Johnson was unstoppable. Mascherano had a good game. Lucas was solid. Ngog minus the dive showed he could be the real deal. It will be important for him to continue in the same fashion as Torres is out till December. Aquilani in his cameo looked impressive. He should be ready for City for his first complete game.

The Galaxy weathered two power outages, a disallowed goal by Andrew Hainault, and a dominant Dynamo display in the second half to score two extra time goals.

Landon Donovan becomes the MLS all time leader in goals scored as he converted the penalty after Alan Gordon was brought down by Ricardo Clark in the box. David Beckham set up the first goal with his curling fee kick and in the ensuing melee in front of the Dynamo goal, the ball came loose to Gregg Berhalter, who tapped the ball home. Congratulations to the Galaxy to make it to the finals after failing to make the playoffs three years in a row.

But the Dynamo had some great chances and Donovan Ricketts had to look very sharp against Brian Ching and Brad Evans. On replay, Andrew Hainault's goal looked legitimate and it was Ching who got pushed down by AJ DeLaGarza.

And yes, there are questions as to why it is not a two legged conference finals.

Today, the Eastern Conference finals begin with RSL meeting the Fire. For MLS fans, a Fire vs Galaxy finals would be a mouth watering prospect with Blanco and Beckham go head to head in a battle of the heavweights

The referees call foul: Sir Alex gets a four match ban

Sir Alex Ferguson was given a four match touchline ban and a fine for 20,000 pounds following his attack on Alan Wiley's fitness. But the referees union is still baying for evermore blood. Here is Alan Leighton of Prospect, the referees union.

"From our point of view it is disappointing. The Football Association had a chance to make a point and they flunked it," Leighton said. "We don't think this is sending the right message out to other managers.

The simmering anger felt at Man Utd because of Sir Alex's attack is palpable. It is one thing, criticizing a referee's decisions. Making fun of his physiognomy is beyond the pale. The union is drawing the line on the cheap shot. As already seen in the Chelsea match, he can rant and rave all he wants. But nobody seems to be buying.

Hackett to try covering "viewing angles" after Ngog dive

Keith Hackett stating the obvious.

"I have said to managers in the past that this is an area of great difficulty for referees and it can come down to the viewing angle of the referee."

I think it is time to give him the goods on the human eye. The game has gotten a lot quicker and the art of deception even more perfect. The eye's memory remains limited and parallax can induce trickery. We can bring more witnesses like Platini's extra two referees but they are still not going to cover every viewing angle.

Peter Walton might self flagellate himself when he sees what Ngog did but the world knew it much before. The diver knew, the defender who tried tackling him knew, the spectators in the stands knew, and the millions of TV viewers knew. It is the one person who influences the game so much who remained oblivious. In the land of the one eyed, the blind is king. That seems counterintuitive but that is exactly what we are doing.

To stop diving we need video replay technology. London is a city under maximum surveillance and it is a bit creepy to find cameras everywhere but it also keeps the city safe. Alex McLeish could have asked for a replay with the match on the line. Peter Walton would have complied. The matter would have been settled with more gloom for Liverpool. Ngog's reputation in tatters. And Hackett would not be bringing up viewing angles. Even small clubs have a fail safe option.

"Shame at the Bernabeu"

All that talk of righting the ship turned out to be bluster as in the Copa Del Rey return leg against Alcorcon at the Bernabeu, Real was able to muster only one goal through Rafel Van Der Vaart. The yellow jerseys of Alcorcon were everywhere as they stifled Raul, Gago, Van Nistelrooy, Kaka, and Lassana Diarra.

Juanma was a colossus in goal for Alcorcon. The third division club moves onto the next round as Real crash out of the Copa Del Rey.

After the match the Bernabeu erupted in a standing ovation for Alcorcon's heroic performance. Even the commentators were overcome as one of them brought up Ronaldinho's scintillating display four years ago as a reminder that Real fans enjoy good football

The knives are out for Manuel Pellegrini once again. The fans were calling for his head and booing him for his decision to take off Lassana Diarra and bring in Marcelo.

The Marca thundered "The team was without a soul and it never looked like threatening lowly Alcorcon".

For all the huge signings at Madrid only one has worked with any degree of success and that is Cristiano Ronaldo. With his injury keeping him out- Kaka, Benzema, and Alonso have struggled to establish any coherence. It has been a grab bag of old horses and some overlooked ones like Raul, Lassana Diarra, and Gonzalo Higuain who have kept Real in the race.
